Chapter 9

وَاللّهُ يَدْعُو إِلَى دَارِ السَّلاَمِ وَيَهْدِي مَن يَشَاءُ إِلَى صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ (سورۃ يونس, آية 25)

But Allah doth call to the Home of Peace: He doth guide whom He pleaseth to a way that is straight. (Surah 10, Verse 25)

After the mid-morning recess, the history teacher came into the eleventh grade class, which consisted of both fellahin and Bedouin. During the lesson, a dispute broke out between two pupils, one from each group. Quarrels between fellahin and Bedouin are common in the school. The teacher pacified them and continued the lesson. Suddenly the quarrel flared up again and spread to the entire class. The two groups - fellahin and Bedouin - began to curse one another and the curses turned into blows until fighting was raging. The teacher could not control them. Fortunately, the principal heard the noise and came in. He talked to the pupils and pacified them. Then he turned to them and said: " I don't want to suspend a single pupil from school, not even for a day. I want you to conduct a sulha which will hold strong for the future as well". When the pupils heard the word ‘sulha' the anger flared up again and neither group was willing to make peace. Then the principal took out the Quran, asked for quiet and read out the verse: "But Allah doth call to the Home of Peace: He doth guide whom He pleaseth to a way that is straight". "God commands you to make peace with one another", he explained, "and you are refusing!" This time all the pupils agreed to a sulha. They displayed initiative, decided on a date and what each would bring and invited all the pupils in the school to take part. It was a memorable event.

Explanation: the Quran is the book of peace and those who are not familiar with it should read several verses. Forgiveness, compassion and peace are among its basic elements. When a teacher stands helpless in the face of the fights, what can she say to the pupils? Next time she will probably know. "Allah doth call to the Home of Peace". This verse sufficed to calm the quarreling boys. Now they are ready for forgiveness because this is the command of God to his children. The principal could have lectured them for hours and tried to clarify who began and what happened. Would he have achieved a better outcome than did the Quran verse? Perhaps and perhaps not. It is sometimes worthwhile to discover what exactly happened, but the command of God has no equals in bringing hearts together and restoring harmony. No investigation, however thorough, can achieve the same results.
