Chapter 11

To those who do right is a goodly (reward)- Yea, more (than in measure)! No darkness nor shame shall cover their faces! they are companions of the garden; they will abide therein (for aye)! (Surah 10, Verse 26)

The head of the local council decided to hold an ‘Environmental Quality Week" in the town. He appealed to all the inhabitants to take part and contribute to the general welfare. He appealed in particular to the school principals and asked them to submit ideas, initiate programs and cooperate with one another.

At a meeting of the principals and teaching staffs, many ideas were raised, including setting aside one day for a clean-up of the town in order to improve its appearance. The principals called on the pupils to volunteer for the task and in order to encourage them to take part in the project, they prepared large posters to be hung in the schools on which they inscribed the verse: "To those who do right is a goodly (reward)- Yea, more (than in measure)! No darkness nor shame shall cover their faces! they are companions of the garden; they will abide therein (for aye)!"

The schoolchildren went out into the streets, collected garbage from roads and courtyards, helped old people to look after their gardens, pruned trees, built up broken fences, fixed sidewalks etc. When a local reporter asked one of the pupils the source of all their energy, the pupil replied: "To those who do right is a goodly (reward)- Yea, more (than in measure)! No darkness nor shame shall cover their faces!" but admitted that he had forgotten the rest of the verse.

Explanation: the Quran is the best possible source for encouraging people to cooperate for the common good and it promises a goodly reward to those who do right. It is the will of God that brothers should live in peace and help one another and contribute to the common good. The Quran enjoins us on various issues and in various contexts. In modern individualist societies the problem is how to teach people to contribute, because each lives his life for himself and each family is enclosed within its home and world. This is not the case in traditional-collectivist societies, where aid to others and to the community is the highest priority. The principals did well in finding the Quran verse which reflects this spirit and quoting it to their pupils.
